Family Engagement
Raising Readers
One way to get parents involved is to hold parent sessions before or after school. Carmen and Shannon have presented to parents on the topic of "Raising Readers." In addition to modeling a read-aloud, the presentation includes practical ways that parents can support their children at home. Carmen shares her own personal story of how she fostered an environment in which reading took a high priority for her own eight children. In addition, Shannon shares how she is fostering an literacy with her two children. They have created a presentation that brings to life many ideas parents can replicate at home as they seek to make reading a part of everyday life. They also supply bilingual bookmarks that include pre, during, and after-reading strategies for parents.
As you get to know your families, consider inviting parents from your school community to help present.

Content Nights
Content Nights are a wonderful way to engage parents, students, teachers, and administrators in the content being taught in school and to foster conversations on what additional supports are needed by all stakeholders.
One example is to hold a “Power Path Night,” in which class projects are arranged along a guided path so that parents could see the sequence of concepts that their children are learning. The path could consist of the learning sequence for a grade level or it could be sequencing the expectations over multiple grades for a specific standard. Students could share their learning activities with parents.
Other examples, include the math and literacy nights held in many of our schools across the district. Parents and students rotate among stations, led by teachers or parents, to play games or engage in activities that foster content skills.
STEM and Social Studies fairs are another way to showcase student learning while educating parents on the standards towards which their children are working. Our district's STEM fair recently showcased students' projects from K-12. After the judging had taken place, parents were invited to visit the exhibits with their children.
For parents of ELs, content nights provide a wonderful opportunity to connect with their child's school and to learn more about the content being taught so they may be better equipped to provide support from home.
